Default aatxe

Simple question, but I've looked all over the internet, and can't find the answer on wikipedia, dictionaries, etc.

How do you pronounce the word "aatxe"?

A group of guildies and I were trapping UW last night, and we all kept avoiding saying this name on TS, as we didn't know how to say it. In my mind, it's basically "at-tacks", but I expect that I'm wrong. Anyone know?

Thanks

I usually end up saying it "atacks" I know its probably wrong...

Almost seems like the t could be silent, so just "axe" maybe

In looking closely at the word I've realized that i'm probably pretty far off base.. but personally it's always been /at-aks/.

Hope that helps..

I've always pronounced it "A-tix", with the emphasis on the long sound of the first syllable.

Some things aren't meant to be properly pronounced. I know my main characters name is that way. It's just so much fun to have others try to figure it out on TS/Vent.

From the Wiki article on aatxes:
Quote:
Aatxe is a Basque ghost in the shape of a red bull, but sometimes in the shape of a man. At night, more so in stormy weather, he arises from the hollow which is his lair. He attacks criminals and other mean people.
So, naturally one would look up what is a Basque. That leads to this central page on Basque, which includes an article on Basque language. Two important parts:
Quote:
Basque also features postalveolar sibilants (/ʃ/, written x, and /tʃ/, written tx), sounding like English sh and ch.
So the tx is the equivalent of a ch.
Quote:
The vowel system is the same as Spanish for most speakers. It consists of five pure vowels, /i e a o u/.
The vowels are pronounced the same as Spanish vowels.

Also, while using Google I found AhoTTS for generating mp3s of Basque pronunciations, which confirms what I looked up.

The correct pronunciation is "aa-che."

Funny..we have altogether given up trying to pronounce that and have intstead renamed them "Bad Axes". I have no clue where the name came from but me and my other half just ended up calling them that.
